Six people, one bench, five stages of polish
The workshop is a former cutlery works on Kelham Island. Everything is cast, filed and polished here, and a ring passes through four pairs of hands before it ships.
Casting
Recycled sterling grain is melted at 980 °C and poured into plaster flasks, 24 rings to a tree.
Filing
Sprues are cut and filed by hand. A dome ring loses about 0.4 g here, which goes back into the melt.
Polishing
600 and 1200 grit paper, tripoli on a stitched mop, white compound, then red rouge on swansdown. About 40 minutes a ring.
Hallmarking
Anything over 7.78 g is sent to be hallmarked, as UK law asks, and comes back stamped 925 with our maker’s mark.
