When the sky is dark

What we saw from the terrace, averaged over the last eight winters. A night counts when the lights were visible for twenty minutes or more. Dark hours are the hours between the end and the start of civil twilight.

December has no sunrise: the sun stays below the ridge from 27 November to 15 January, and 11:20 on 15 January is the first of the year. Times are local, so October is still on summer time.

  • Polar night, 27 November to 15 January

The sun stays below the ridge. The sky at noon is a long blue hour, and the lights can show from mid afternoon.

  • Full moon

The lights are fainter but the hills are lit and the fjord shows. We list the moon dates when you book so you can choose.

  • Cloud

The coast has about eleven clear nights a month in winter. When it is covered we drive inland to the plateau, forty minutes, where it is usually open.
