Neap, a float and cold water studio on Spike Island, Bristol. Floats from £58.
Float for an hour in water as warm as your skin.
Each room holds 25 cm of water with 520 kg of Epsom salt dissolved in it, so you lie on the surface without trying. The room is dark and quiet, and the light stays off until you want it.
- 60 or 90 minutes
- Water and air at 35.5 °C
- Four private rooms
The first twenty minutes
Most people spend them noticing small things: the pump going quiet, their own breathing, water at the temperature of their skin until it stops feeling like water. After that there is very little left to notice.
Then three minutes at 6 °C
Float and cold ends in the plunge pool. A guide stands with you, counts the first ten breaths and calls time at three minutes. Most first timers stay in for about ninety seconds, and that is plenty.
The hour after is part of it
The lounge upstairs has tea, blankets and no phones. Nobody is booked into your room for twenty minutes after you, so you can dress slowly and leave when you are ready.
Float and cold, 105 minutes, £82.
Sessions and prices
Every session is booked online and starts on the hour or the half hour. Prices include towels, earplugs, shampoo and tea upstairs afterwards.

Inside a float room
Four rooms, each big enough to stand up in, so nobody climbs into a pod. The water is filtered three times over between every float and tested twice a day.
Salt does the work
With 520 kg of magnesium sulphate in 25 cm of water, the water is denser than you are, and your face, chest and knees sit above it whatever you do. Most people float with their arms by their sides or above their head.
Water and air are both held at 35.5 °C, the temperature of your skin, so after a few minutes it is hard to tell where you end. The light and the music are yours to switch off, and an intercom by the door reaches the front desk.

Your first float
It takes about an hour and forty minutes from the door back to the street. Bring yourself; towels, a hair dryer and everything for the shower are here.
Arrive 15 minutes early
We show you the room, the light switch and the intercom, and answer anything you want to ask.
Shower, then float
Wash off any oil or make up, put in earplugs, step in and lie back. Music plays for five minutes, then it is quiet until five minutes before the end.
Shower again and sit for a while
The salt rinses off in a couple of minutes. Tea is upstairs, and you can stay as long as you like.
Before you book
Please wait four weeks after a new tattoo and two days after colouring your hair, or the salt will lift the colour. If you are pregnant, or have epilepsy, a heart condition or an open wound, call us first and we will talk it through.
Floating is not a treatment for any condition. It is an hour of warm, quiet water, and that is all we claim for it.
